EV lease tax credit passthrough by brand
Which OEM lease pages actually show a federal-style credit as cap-cost reduction, and which ones stay silent.
5 min read
On a qualifying EV lease the lessor — not you — typically claims the federal commercial clean-vehicle credit. The only question that matters to a shopper is whether that credit shows up as a lower cap cost or payment on the worksheet.
BMW USA’s 2026 iX xDrive45 lease example does that in public: a $7,500 Lease Credit inside the capitalized-cost math. Volkswagen says tax incentives and special lease offers exist on the ID.4 and does not print $7,500. Everyone else in this set is unpublished on a consumer page we could cite.
This table is dated August 2026 on purpose. Credit rules and OEM ads change by model year. Re-read the current offer footnote before you treat any row as live.
TLDR Quick Guide
- You usually do not file for the credit on a consumer EV lease. The captive does.
- BMW USA (iX example, through June 1, 2026 on that page): $7,500 Lease Credit in cap cost.
- VW.com: “available tax incentives” on EV leases — no dollar line on that page.
- Tesla, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Honda: no public $7,500 lease-credit line we could cite in August 2026.
- If the credit is real on your deal, it is a named line on the worksheet. Marketing copy is not enough.
What OEM pages actually print
| Brands | Captive lender | What the OEM publishes on a lease | As of | Published on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW | BMW Financial Services | BMW USA 2026 iX xDrive45 lease example lists a $7,500 Lease Credit in the capitalized-cost math, alongside a $925 acquisition fee. That is the lessor applying a lease credit on the worksheet — not a shopper filing Form 8936. | 2026-06 (offer valid through June 1, 2026 on that page) | bmwusa.com |
| Volkswagen | Volkswagen Credit | VW.com lease-an-EV page: take advantage of available tax incentives and special lease offers on models like the ID.4. It does not publish a $7,500 line item on that page. | 2026-08 | vw.com |
How to confirm passthrough on a quote
- Find a line that says lease credit, EV credit, federal credit, or similar, as a cap-cost reduction.
- Confirm the VIN qualifies — trim, MSRP cap, and assembly rules still apply to the lessor’s claim.
- Do not double-count. If you also see a state rebate, ask whether it is lease-eligible.
- A payment that “looks like” $7,500 was applied is not proof. The line item is proof.
Brands that do not publish a line item
| Brands | Captive lender | What the OEM publishes on a lease | As of | Published on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda, Acura | Honda Financial Services | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Toyota, Lexus | Toyota Financial Services / Lexus Financial Services | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Nissan, Infiniti | Nissan Motor Acceptance (NMAC) | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Hyundai, Kia, Genesis | Hyundai Capital America | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Subaru | Subaru Motors Finance (Chase) | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Mazda | Mazda Financial Services | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Audi | Audi Financial Services | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Ford, Lincoln | Ford Credit | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac | GM Financial | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |
| Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler | Stellantis Financial / Chrysler Capital | No public lease-credit line item | — | — |

Silence is not a no. Tesla, Ford, and GM have all passed credit through leases in some program months. It is also not a yes. Ask for the worksheet line. This page will be wrong if we invent one.

Key Takeaways
- Lessor claims the federal commercial credit; you look for the cap-cost line.
- BMW’s published iX example includes a $7,500 Lease Credit — offer-dated.
- VW acknowledges incentives without a dollar figure on that page.
- Re-verify every model year. This is the table most likely to rot.
FAQs
Usually the lessor claims it. You get the benefit only if it is passed through as a lower cap cost or payment. BMW’s 2026 iX ad shows that as a $7,500 Lease Credit. If your worksheet has no such line, you did not get it.
As of August 2026, BMW USA publishes a $7,500 lease credit on at least one iX example. VW mentions tax incentives without a figure. Other major captives do not print a dollar passthrough on the consumer pages we checked.
On a typical consumer lease, no — the lessor is the claimant. Talk to a tax advisor if the structure is unusual. Do not file for a credit the captive already took.
Tesla’s current-offers footnotes we read name a $695 acquisition fee and 10,000 miles per year. They do not name a $7,500 lease credit. Ask Tesla Account how the current order prices the federal incentive.
